What will the PlayStation 5 operating system be like? We know a lot about Sony’s next-generation system, such as the PS5’s SSD hard drive and backward compatibility with the PS4, but we don’t yet know what it will look like when it’s powered on. Modern systems like PlayStation 4 have a main menu before entering your game, which you can use to contact friends and sign in to the PlayStation Store. However, it appears that the PS5 is taking things to the next level.
A patent published by Sony Interactive Entertainment last week deals with “interactive interfaces” and coincides with comments that architect Mark Cerny made to Wired last year. In fact, the Japanese giant wants to remove the separation between the operating system and the game and add elements of the user interface of each title to the main menu of the console.
“We don’t want the player to start the game to see what’s going on, to start the game and see what’s going on,” said Marble Madness. “Multiplayer game servers provide the console with a variety of pluggable activities in real time. Single-player games provide information about missions you can complete and the rewards you get for completing them, and all of these options are displayed in the user interface. As a player, you jump straight to what you want. ”
So what does this mean? Suppose Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is installed on your PS5. Cerny seems to describe a scenario in which, without starting the game, you can display the available playlists and multiplayer activities directly from the main menu of the PS5. The console also displays the missions you have completed in solo mode and you can jump directly to any mission.
It sounds like a small thing, but by integrating the game’s user interface into the console operating system, you can effectively skip various stages of the traditional startup process. If you currently select a game, wait to load it, choose a mode and choose a level, instead you can choose a level directly from the main menu of the PS5. Speed and efficiency seem to be essential to the next generation experience.
