There’s something about color that draws users in, while setting a mood and tone. When it comes to design, we can use a lot of tools—but color is by far one of the most effective. Color conveys important meaning, which makes it incredibly powerful. Of course, colors are also a matter of personal preference and taste; but as designers, we have to take into account how colors affect our audience and help us create more efficient experiences.
2) Typography
Typography is essential to creating a visually pleasing and easy-to-read design. Fonts that are too small or in uncommon formats can be difficult to read, so designers usually stick with well-known fonts like Arial and Verdana—this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but it is useful as a general guideline.
3) Contrast
One of my favorite design principles to leverage when designing is contrast. Contrast is useful for grabbing attention, drawing focus to important elements, and creating a clear visual hierarchy. In most cases, it’s best to use contrasting colors or values (i.e., dark text on light backgrounds, vice versa) and shapes that are opposite each other on a color wheel (i.e., triangles vs squares). Don’t get me wrong—contrast alone doesn’t make great design.
4) Whitespace
Whitespace refers to all of that negative space within and around an app. There’s a common belief that whitespace is visually appealing, but it serves so much more of a purpose. Whitespace allows users to focus on individual items without feeling overwhelmed. The trick with whitespace is finding ways to incorporate it into design while still maintaining visual balance. In most cases, less really is more when it comes to whitespace in mobile apps.
5) Navigation
For first-time users, navigation is probably one of the most important aspects of an app. Nothing can be more frustrating than not being able to find what you’re looking for or ending up in a dead end. However, creating a well-designed navigation system with attention to detail is crucial to improving user experience.
